How to Promote SERRV

Maybe you’ve held a SERRV Sale, made a donation, volunteered for SERRV or simply purchased SERRV products, and now you’re ready to become an even more active advocate for fair trade and SERRV. Be a SERRV Super Fan and help us eradicate poverty!
One way you can support SERRV is by getting the word out, whether online or close to home. Here are some tips and ideas to get you started, but feel free to support SERRV in your own way! Email marketing [at] serrv.org or call 1.888.243.4423 to share your best ideas and successes.
Tell Your Friends and Family Word-of-mouth is one of the biggest ways that people learn about SERRV. Talk to people you know about your personal connection with SERRV – how you found us and why you support us. Hand out SERRV Brochures to those who want to find out more. Maybe even leave a SERRV Catalog at your doctor’s office. Check out our Quick Talking Points or our Frequently Asked Questions so you’re prepared.
Ask for SERRV Gifts If your family or friends are looking for gifts for you, make sure they know that you’d like ones from SERRV. If you’re putting together a list of gift ideas for a special occasion, you can use sites such as the following:
Give a Presentation Your church or community group may want to hear more about SERRV, an organization making the world better. If you would like a dvd with a SERRV presentation you can share, please email marketing [at] serrv.org or call us at 1.888.243.4423. We also have a pdf version of the presention you can print out and distribute.
Use Your Online Networks Write a post about SERRV in your online social networks. The post can be as simple as, “Make sure to check out www.serrv.org for gifts this year. SERRV is a great fair trade organization that supports artisans around the world!”
Here are some examples of where and how you can use social networking to promote SERRV:
- Create a Facebook or MySpace status update
- Write a Twitter tweet
- Take a photo of your favorite SERRV product and post on Flickr
- Message your friends on Eons or CafeMom
New social networks pop up all the time!
Don’t forget to become a fan of SERRV on Facebook and join our Cause on Facebook!
Look for Free Advertising See if your church or community newsletter would consider placing a free advertisement about SERRV – make sure to mention that we are a 501(c)3 nonprofit. You can use one of these files: large medium small, or contact marketing [at] serrv.org for a customized or web version.
Blog about SERRV Do you have a blog or write for one? We’d love to have you write about us! What do you like about SERRV? What are your favorite fairly traded products? Personalize it! Contact Jessica King at jessicak [at] serrv.org if you would like more information or assistance.
Comment about SERRV When you see a relevant article online, leave a comment that references SERRV such as, “Thanks for the great piece on fair trade. SERRV is another fantastic organization that works to ensure artisans and farmers are treated and paid fairly. You can find all their products at www.serrv.org.”
And for printed media such as newspapers and magazines, letters to the editor can be a great way to further a discussion about fair trade and the organizations that make it happen.
Use Your Media Connections Know a reporter or have a contact at a local media source? Let them know about SERRV and why we’re important. See our Quick Talking Points to give you a start on what to say. Or simply pass on a promising media opportunity to Jessica King at jessicak [at] serrv.org. Visit our Press & Media section for more information.
Hold an Social Event Setting up fair trade coffee and chocolate break is an excellent way to share the message of fair trade while spending time with friends. World Fair Trade Day (second Saturday in May) and Fair Trade Month (October) make good occasions to have an event, but fair trade is important all year round!
Scout for Volunteers If you know someone that could provide a skill or service to further SERRV’s efforts, tell them about us! We look for volunteers in a variety of areas. Many people volunteer with mailings and product pricing in our Operations Center in New Windsor, Maryland, and we also seek volunteer product designers to work with our artisan partners and marketing professionals to assist our staff in Madison, Wisconsin. Of course, one easy way for anyone to volunteer is to hold a SERRV Sale!
