Rubia embroiderers Gulsima and Nafas |
Rubia is a nonprofit organization committed to empowering Afghan women while respecting Afghan culture and values and preserving traditional crafts. Rubia began working in Pakistan in 2000, supporting women refugees from Afghanistan through income generation as well as literacy work. In 2003, Rubia moved its organization to Afghanistan as the refugees returned home and continues to work with women in handcraft production, literacy, health education, and sustaining cultural heritage through crafts.
Rubia’s handcraft work is embroidered by women in the high mountain valley of Darrai Noor and the capital city of Kabul, and includes bags, pillow covers, and other textiles with Afghan designs that come from a deep rooted tradition of embroidery. For many of the women working with Rubia, sales of their embroidery work has been the first opportunity to earn an income and allows them to meet basic needs, like purchasing food, medicines, clothing, and shelter.
SERRV recognizes the timeliness for providing support to people in Afghanistan right now, especially women. Our partnership with Rubia provides women and their families with a powerful alternative that is key to Afghanistan’s social and economic recovery.
