Mayan Hands
Weaving on a Backstrap Loom
Mayan Hands works with 230 Maya women who are organized into 12 different groups of weavers from small villages across Guatemala, from the Western Highlands to the Northern region of Rabinal. Most of the weavers work on the ancient backstrap loom, a simple device on which even expert weavers can produce only one inch per hour. A few of the weavers work on the larger and more efficient standing loom. They all produce items of exquisite quality, with the typical Mayan flair for combining bright colors. Mayan Hands assists these talented weavers in technical training, organization skills, quality control, design and product development. Selling their products in a fair trade market allows the weavers and their families to eat better, send their children to school and harbor hope for a better future.
