A visit to a Mayan coffee cooperative in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, convinced a few social entrepreneurs from Wisconsin that sales of coffee in the U.S. could help disadvantaged coffee farmers. With coffee prices at an all-time low, they set out to build a business model that would do right by these farmers, and Just Coffee was born in 2001. Trained neither in coffee making nor business strategy, the founders honed their roasting skills over time, learning from business missteps, and succeeding with sheer energy and momentum. In addition to coffee from Chiapas, the organization today imports green beans from cooperatives around the world, including Guatemala, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Peru, Ethiopia, Laos, and Indonesia. Based in Madison, Wisconsin, Just Coffee is proud to be a cooperatively-run coffee roaster that offers delicious fair trade, shade-grown, certified organic coffee. A small player in the coffee industry, this cooperative boasts a loud voice.
