Bombolulu Workshops

Bombolulu Workshops works with adults who are blind or physically disabled, training them to become artisans skilled in a variety of craft techniques. Your purchase helps these artisans overcome their physical challenges, earn an income, and realize their full potential.

A project by Kenya's Association for the Physically Disabled, Bombolulu Workshops opened in 1969 near Mombasa. This fair trade nonprofit employs adults who are physically disadvantaged and have little chance of employment elsewhere. Trained in jewelry making, screen printing, wood carving and crafting, these trained artisans become skilled in producing intricate and whimsical jewelry, home décor, and other hand-crafted products for local and international markets. Bombolulu employs an on-staff designer to work on new product ideas, and forges strategic partnerships with other organizations to advance its cause. Uniquely self-sustaining, the Bombolulu campus includes workshops, housing for artisans, a cultural center and a large showroom and store featuring African handicrafts. Guided by the motto "disability is not inability," the organization employs over 100 artisans, enhancing their benefits by assisting with medical care and providing education for artisans' children.
