JusTea provides steady employment to small-scale tea farmers in the Nandi Hills of Kenya, the world's largest exporter of tea. Your purchase provides fair trade employment to farmers, creates new jobs, and sustains rural communities.
JusTea was started in 2013 following a trip to a Kenyan tea farm by father and son, Grayson and Paul Bain. In speaking with tea farmers, the Bains heard the same thing over and over again: that being a small-scale tea farmer in Kenya was not sustainable. In fact, large-scale factories often paid these farmers less than $2 per day—an impossible wage on which to support their families. JusTea empowers these farmers to earn a steady wage so that they can circulate money back to their families and communities. The company works in partnerships with its producers, and has created more than 200 jobs for farmers, who earn 20% more than the industry average. The company has also created employment for the 30 rural woodworkers who create their hand-carved teaspoons, and supports educational initiatives and a lending library for nearly 800 rural children. Though they produce a variety of teas, JusTea is known for its Purple Tea, a new antioxidant-rich cultivar with the power to create a new market—and empowered livelihoods for Kenyan tea farmers.
