Maquita works to improve the income of small-scale farmers and artisans by helping develop and market their handcrafts and agricultural products. Your purchase enables them to earn a steady income and compete on the global market. Handcrafts often supplement insufficient agricultural earnings, and preserve Ecuador's cultural traditions.
In response to growing poverty and rising costs of living in Ecuador during the 1980s, a group of faith-based communities organized to find a solution. The result was the formation of Maquita Cushunchic Comercializando Como Hermanos in 1985, a cooperative marketing organization named for its mission: "Let's join hands and do business as brothers." The organization represents 400 small farmers and rural artisan groups throughout Ecuador, some that produce both agricultural products and handicrafts to carve out a living. Assisting with product development, production, marketing, and access to global markets, Maquita also supports farmers exporting fair trade cacao, women's cooperatives, and socially responsible tourism.
