Mata Traders' mission is to "fashion a better world" by creating designs that celebrate a woman's originality and empower her to use her dollar for change. Your purchase brings fair wages to artisans from rural areas, tribal villages, and urban slums in India and Nepal, providing a stable source of income and the opportunity to lift families and communities out of poverty.
Bright colors, vintage-inspired styles, and fits that flatter real women are the fundamentals of Mata style, expressed through centuries-old craft techniques like block and screen printing, handwoven ikat, and embroidery. Founded in 2007, Mata Traders partners with fair trade organizations that train and employ hundreds of artisans in marginalized communities, with a focus on gender equity and empowering women ("Mata" means "mother" in Hindi). Artisan co-ops are owned by women members, and all artisans receive health care, paid maternity leave, retirement pensions, daycare, counseling services, and skills training. Mata also focuses on combatting child labor by providing a stable income to women at the poverty level.
