Frequently Asked Questions About Tree Decor

  • What tree decor does SERRV offer?

The collection includes tree skirts, tree toppers, and garlands, all handmade by artisan partners in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Peru, and the Philippines. You'll find hand-knit wool and appliqued arpillera skirts, upcycled sari patchwork, capiz shell and brass toppers, and felt, pom pom, bell, and sari garlands. Prices run from about $15 to $169.

  • What size tree skirt do I need?

Choose a skirt a little wider than the lowest branches of your tree, so the stand is hidden and the skirt shows around the edges. As a rough guide, a skirt about 36 to 42 inches across suits a tree up to 6 feet. A 7 to 7.5 foot tree looks best with a skirt of about 45 to 50 inches, and taller trees need 50 inches or more. SERRV's skirts range from 37 to 49 inches in diameter, and each product page lists the exact size.

  • What is the difference between a tree skirt and a tree collar?

A tree skirt is a flat circle of fabric that lies on the floor around the stand. A tree collar is a rigid ring that stands up around the base and hides the stand behind a low wall. A collar looks tailored and keeps its shape. A skirt looks softer and covers a wider area. Many of SERRV's tree skirts feature ties to bring the two edges together without unsightly gaps.

  • How do you put on a tree topper?

Put the topper on before the tree is fully decorated, while the top branches are easy to reach. Slide the cone or coiled base over the top stem of the tree. If the stem is thin or leans, tie it to a short dowel or a straightened wire hanger with floral wire to stiffen it, then set the topper on top. SERRV's capiz toppers have a coiled cone base that slips onto the tip of the tree.

  • How do you hang a garland on a Christmas tree?

Start at the top and work down in loose swags or a gentle spiral, letting the garland drape between branches instead of pulling it tight. Lighter garlands such as felt stars and pom poms can sit right on the branches. Heavier bell garlands look best draped toward the outer tips of the tree. The same garlands also work on a mantel, a staircase, or a doorway.

  • How do you care for a handmade tree skirt?

Check the care instructions on each product page, since they vary by material. Embellished and appliqued skirts, such as those with beads, sequins, and mirrors, should be spot cleaned only. Hand-knit wool and printed cotton skirts can be hand washed cold and dried flat or on a line. After the season, fold or roll the skirt loosely and store it somewhere dry so the embellishments don't crush.
