Recycled saris are double-layered and embellished with hand-stitched kantha embroidery to create these lightweight throws. Each one is a unique patchwork of patterns with primarily blues, greens, and purples on one side. No two throws are alike, and patterns and colors will vary—let us choose for you! Machine wash cold, line dry.

We recommend washing with 1/2 cup baking soda before first use to remove any mustiness that may have appeared during transit.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Kantha Patchwork Cool Square Throw

  • What is a kantha throw?

A kantha throw is a lightweight blanket made by layering recycled cotton saris and stitching them together with the traditional Indian kantha running stitch. SERRV's Kantha Patchwork throws are double-layered and hand-embroidered by artisans in East India, creating a soft, one-of-a-kind patchwork of color.

  • What size is this kantha throw?

This Kantha Patchwork throw measures 56 inches square, a generous lap-and-sofa size that also works as a lightweight summer blanket or a layer at the foot of a bed. Larger kantha bedcovers and quilts are available from SERRV in twin and queen sizes.

  • How do you wash a kantha throw?

Machine wash cold, separately, and line dry to protect the delicate embroidery; the soft, lived-in texture only improves with washing. SERRV recommends washing with about half a cup of baking soda before first use to refresh the fabric after transit, and avoiding bleach to protect the recycled-sari colors.

  • Is each kantha throw really one of a kind?

Yes. Because every throw is pieced from different recycled saris and hand stitched, no two are alike in color or pattern. This Cool colorway leans toward blues, greens, and purples, and SERRV chooses one for you, so expect a unique mix.

  • How do you style a kantha throw?

Drape it over a sofa or armchair, fold it across the foot of a bed, or take it along as a light summer blanket or picnic throw. Because kantha throws are reversible and richly patterned, they add instant color and texture over neutral furniture or bedding.

  • Who makes SERRV's kantha throws, and are they fair trade?

SERRV's kantha throws are hand stitched by fair trade artisan groups in East India, many of them women who gain financial independence through their work. Each purchase provides vital, sustainable income and helps preserve this traditional craft.
