Frequently Asked Questions About Wall Art

  • What kinds of wall art does SERRV offer?

The collection includes hand-cut recycled metal art from Haiti, woven wall tapestries from Peru and Ecuador, decorative wall hooks and metal art from India, natural and upcycled sari peace wreaths from the Philippines and Bangladesh, and woven wall baskets from Ghana, Uganda, and eSwatini. Seasonal pieces such as snowflake trees, peace doves, and cardinals join the collection for the holidays.

  • What is Haitian metal art?

Haitian metal art, also called fer decoupe, is a folk-art tradition associated with the town of Croix-des-Bouquets near Port-au-Prince. Artisans flatten discarded steel oil drums, draw a design, then cut, hammer, and emboss it by hand with chisels to create texture and depth. Many pieces are then painted in bright colors. Each one is handmade, so no two are identical.

  • How do you hang metal wall art?

Most of SERRV's Haitian pieces have a hanging loop or ring attached to the back, so one picture hook or nail into a stud or a wall anchor is enough for smaller pieces. For larger or heavier pieces, use two anchors to keep the art level and steady. Hang it at eye level, with the center about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. For the pieces that don't have a hanging loop or ring, you can simply hang it from any open space in the art using a hook or nail.

  • How do you care for painted metal wall art?

Dust it with a soft, dry cloth and keep it out of standing water. To keep the paint bright, SERRV recommends applying a clear protective coating once a year. A clear spray sealant works on both the painted and unpainted metal. Don't use abrasive cleaners, which can scratch the hand-painted finish.

  • Do you carry Christmas and holiday wall art?

Yes. Each fall SERRV adds holiday designs such as snowflake trees, angels, peace doves, and cardinals in recycled metal from Haiti. Arpillera nativity scenes from Peru are also available. Because the metal designs are made from durable materials rather than paper or glass, many people leave them up after the holidays as winter decor.

  • Who makes SERRV's wall art?

Fair trade artisan groups in Haiti, Peru, Ecuador, India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, and several African countries make each piece by hand. In Haiti, the metal art is made by Comite Artisanal Haitien, which provides income to artisans who turn recycled oil drums and other local materials into art.
